Windows 8 comes with the anti-malware software Windows Defender pre-installed and activated. This provides real-time protection against viruses, spyware and other internet threats, and is a replacement for Microsoft Security Essentials, which does not run on the new operating system.
Confusingly, Security Essentials was Microsoft’s replacement for a previous tool, also called Windows Defender, and it looks identical to this new program of the same name.
You can’t run the Windows 8 version of Defender on other editions of Windows, but Microsoft Security Essentials provides a perfectly adequate level of protection for your PC. It’s very easy to use, offers Quick, Full and Custom scans, and lets you schedule the scans at a time that best suits you.
For particularly stubborn malware infections, such as rootkits, download Microsoft’s free tool Windows Defender Offline. This can be installed on and run from a CD, DVD or USB drive, to detect and remove stubborn security threats. This programs Works with Windows Vista and 7.
